Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine
Following advice from JCVI, NHS Scotland recommends that people outlined in the criteria below are offered the RSV vaccine from Aug 24:
- Everyone turning 75 years old on or after 1 August 24, up to and including 31 July 2025, will be offered the RSV vaccine this year.
- For the first year of the programme, the vaccine will also be offered to those who are already aged 75-79 years on 01 Aug 2024. This means individuals will be offered the vaccine if their DOB is between 02/08/1944 and 31/07/1950 inclusive.
- Individuals who are pregnant from 28 weeks pregnant.

Practice involvement in health research
Why do research?
As a practice, we feel that research is essential for NHS progress and can be of considerable benefit for individual patients and the public as a whole.
What is research?
Research can involve a range of activities, from filling in a questionnaire or being interviewed, to testing a new drug or procedure. Each study will explain, in detail, what is required.
How do you choose who to invite?
This practice takes part in research studies with the help of experienced NHS staff who access patient’s medical records solely for the purpose of identifying and inviting patients to take part in research studies. Each study will be looking for different patient ‘groups’ based on set study criteria. No personal identifiable data is removed from the NHS or provided to any researchers without specific consent from patients.
Do I have to take part in research?
If you receive an invitation to take part in research, you are not obliged to take part. If you don’t want to be contacted about research studies at all, please let the reception staff or your GP know.

Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)
In the past there have been several cases of mumps at the University. Protection from this viral illness is provided by the MMR vaccine. If you have not been immunised, or think you have only had one dose of MMR, then please contact the Practice to arrange an appointment to see the Practice Nurse for this vaccine.

Meningitis ACWY
First time University entrants under the age of 25 are advised to be vaccinated against Meningitis ACWY, prior to coming to Heriot Watt University. If you have not had this before coming to University, then you can attend the University Health Centre to arrange GP registration, and book an appointment to have this vaccination.
The Scottish Government recommends that students under the age of 25 who have never received a dose of Meningitis ACWY vaccine, should now receive the Meningitis ACWY vaccine to provide the best possible protection for this age group.
Registered students under the age of 25 that fall into the criteria above, who wish to have the Meningitis ACWY vaccine should contact the Practice to arrange an appointment with the Practice Nurse.

DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENTS
The Practice is continually reviewing the way in which appointments are booked and how patients have contact with their GP. The Practice is currently using a mixture of face-to-face appointments and telephone triage appointments. If you are offered a telephone triage appointment a GP will initially discuss your symptoms over the phone and if necessary ask you to attend the practice in person for review.
Please still consider using your local pharmacy or NHS Inform website www.nhsinform.scot as your first point of contact. If you do need an appointment please book it by telephone rather than turning up in person.
Vaccination Change
Vaccinations including Flu, shingles, pneumovac and travel will no longer be done in General Practice. If you are eligible for a Flu, shingles or pneumovac you will be contacted by the Lothian vaccination team at the appropriate time.

Please note ALL eye problems should be directed to an optician and not a GP.

The Practice is a non-limited partnership and was founded in 1994 having originally functioned as a branch surgery of Currie Group Practice since 1971. We provide the full range of General Medical Services under the National Health Service as well as other non-NHS services as detailed in this leaflet. The Practice also largely constitutes the University Health Service for Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.
